LOCKHEED MARTIN CODE QUEST® ACADEMY
Parental Consent Process
Introduction
Code Quest® Academy is available for anyone to use to improve their programming skills. However, if a child under 13 years of age wishes to create an account, US privacy laws require that we obtain a parent or legal guardian's consent before we collect any personal information about that child. This page explains how this consent process works, why it is required, and how we use and protect children's personal information.
Relevant Privacy Laws
The United States Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (15 U.S.C. §§ 6501-6505, often known as COPPA) outlines a series of requirements for website operators that intend to work with children under the age of 13. The Federal Trade Commission, in turn, has implemented a series of rules to enforce this law. In general, these rules require that we:
- Obtain a parent or legal guardian's consent prior to collecting any personal information of a child under 13 years old;
- Follow certain verifiable procedures to obtain that consent;
- Provide a notice of what information we collect, why, how it's used, and parent's/guardian's rights with respect to that information; and
- Employ reasonable safeguards to protect that information.
For more information on COPPA and its legal requirements, please visit the Federal Trade Commission's website.
Our Parental Consent Process
When a person attempts to create an account, they'll be asked if they are over or under the age of 13. If they state they're 13 or older, this process doesn't apply; COPPA only requires that we obtain consent for children under 13, so they can proceed to create an account. If the child is 12 or younger, they'll be informed that we need to obtain consent first. To do so...
- The child will be asked to enter their parent's or legal guardian's email address. They won't be asked for any personal information other than that at this time.
- Our website will send an email with a copy of the consent form (which can also be downloaded below) to the provided email.
- The parent or guardian must print out the form, review the information it contains, then fill out and sign the last page of the form.
- The parent or guardian emails a scan or clear photograph of the signed form to our team at code-quest-academy.gr-eo@lmco.com.
- Our team will review the form, and reach out if there are any issues. If all looks well, we will create accounts on the website for both the parent/guardian (if they didn't have one already) and the child. The accounts will be linked in our system so we know who has given consent for the child's account. Both the parent/guardian and the child will receive an email with a temporary password to their respective accounts.
Blank consent forms can be downloaded using the links below. Please be sure to fill out the form clearly in blue or black ink (don't use a computer to fill out the fields and signature).

Who Can Access This Information, and How Is It Used?
Lockheed Martin Quest™ is a volunteer-run program within Lockheed Martin Corporation, which organizes and runs the Code Quest® Academy website, among other programs. All of our volunteers are Lockheed Martin employees. The information we collect is made available to a small selection of Lockheed Martin Quest™ volunteers - on a strictly as-needed basis - in order to assist with their responsibilities in maintaining this website and responding to requests for help with solving problems. All collected information is stored in an encrypted database hosted on Amazon Web Services on servers within the United States.
The Code Quest® Academy website also provides a classroom management feature, in which users can create a "class" which other users can choose to join. The creator of the class (the "Mentor") will be able to see the names of those people who join the class ("Students"), and the most recent solutions for each problem from each Student. Users are able to see the name of the Mentor of a class if they have access to the class's unique token, which is needed to join the class and become a Student. This feature does not provide any messaging or social networking capability, and email addresses are never displayed within the application.
Lockheed Martin does not share, sell, rent, or transfer personal information except as noted above or as required by law.
How Do We Protect This Information?
All information we collect is stored in an encrypted database, and can only be accessed by individuals with a need to access that information. We maintain all reasonable precautions, including appropriate technical and organizational security measures, policies, and procedures in order to protect personal information against unauthorized access, disclosure, and misuse. We also ensure that all inactive accounts are removed from our system on a regular basis. If you decline to give consent for us to collect your child's information, we will not collect said information. Your own contact information is used solely to make the initial request for consent, and is not stored in our system unless consent is granted.
What Rights Do I Have Regarding This Information?
Parents and legal guardians of children retain full rights to their children's personal information. Specifically, they have the right to:
- Review what information has been collected for their child(ren)
- Request corrections to the information we have collected for their child(ren)
- Revoke consent for Lockheed Martin to collect their child(ren)'s information
Additionally, all users have access to a "Delete Profile" button within their profile management page. Clicking this button will delete your account and all personal information associated with it. If you are a parent or guardian of a child for whom you have granted us consent to collect information, this will also delete their account.
